2017-02-24 · The play is Brecht’s direct critique of the fascist ideology of the Nazi Germany and is nowadays considered as one of the greatest anti-war plays ever written. The play is set in the 17 th century, and the narrative follows a woman named Mother Courage and her three children who are pulling a cart and selling provisions to soldiers in the wake of the Thirty Years’ War.

Of all of Brecht’s main techniques, the one that hadn’t been mentioned is his use of actors and method of assigning them roles. In Brecht’s plays an actor could play more than one character without using make-up or costumes to try differentiate. In Palindromes this idea works in an opposite way and turns into an extreme distancing device. Although not made explicit in the play, this is the first time that Brecht’s drama explores what is essentially a Marxist view of how the base (economic) structure of a society shapes the specific class identity of any individual, and how a change in material circumstances might offer the dialectical possibility of changing social and therefore personal relationships. Brecht’s work can be best desribed in three specific stages. ‘The Early Period’, ‘The Propaganda Plays’ and ‘The Plays of Brecht’s Maturity’.

However, because this language is built upon a certain bold and direct simplicity, his plays often lose something in the translation from his native German. Nevertheless, they contain a rare poetic vision, a voice that has rarely been paralleled in the 20th century.

Brecht died suddenly in It turns out to be very different from the Brecht I know well. There are nine plays in this early volume, four full-length and five shorts, and one of them stood out high above the others. When I was younger and a regular in my city library I often would glance at the collected volumes of Brecht plays and wonder what they might be about. Brecht wrote his first full-length play, Baal, in 1918, followed by Drums in the Night in February 1919.
